Benchmark Fly the flag for branded CCTV
In recent years, we have seen an increasing number of new suppliers surfacing in the electronic security industry, many of whom are offering unknown brands or unbranded product. In most cases the main selling point is low cost. Whilst some might shun anything considered low cost, the truth is that much of this equipment is good quality, and achieves a low cost by simply omitting some of the additional features and functions that are more expensive to implement. As we have said many times, there is no point in paying for functions you don't need or won't use.

That said, there are a number of less than scrupulous suppliers who see the security industry as somewhere to dump sub-standard kit, or to offer sub-standard service. Indeed, often the two go hand in hand, as some installers have learned to their cost. It is often when dealing with such suppliers that after-sales service and warranties are most important. Sadly, in the current climate, it is all too easy for the unscrupulous to pull the plug and walk away, effectively leaving the installer liable for any issues that arise with equipment that has been sold on to end users.

This isn't only a problem with unbranded equipment. Some branded equipment has been brought in as grey imports, and if the supplier goes bust, often the manufacturers won't support it, because the actual models aren't available in the UK. Even where suppliers resurface in another guise, they won't offer warranties. They might deal with small issues in good faith, usually to get your custom back, back if something major occurs, you won't see them for dust. You could inherit a legacy of liability.

Installers must ensure that they deal with established and credible suppliers who show commitment to the security industry. There are plenty of companies offering lower cost products - if that's what you really want - that are a part of the industry rather than simply trying to take your money and run. Take heed of what your peers are saying, of which manufacturers have a high industry profile, and make sure you don't become the scapegoat for those seeking a quick profit.
