EC Directive and the effect on Video Cassette Recorders |
The European Parliament issued a directive – 2002/95/EC, which restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. This is in conjunction with the measurers on the collection, treatment, recycling and disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
Without reproducing the entire document verbatim - Article 4 from the official document reads: -
1 Member states shall ensure that, from 1 July 2006, new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market does not contain lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, poly-brominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). National measures restricting or prohibiting the use of these substances in electrical and electronic equipment which were adopted in line with Community legislation before the adoption of this directive may be maintained until 1 July 2006.
I understand that Video Cassette Recorders contain one or more of the above.
As there has been a significant increase in the use and sale of digital recorders (DVRs), rather than enter into a long and expensive research and development programme into finding alternatives to the offending materials used in VCRs, manufacturers are phasing out their production of VCRs.
As indicated above no new VCRs can be produced from 1 July 2006, however we understand that production has already ceased and VCRs are now in short supply.
There is no apparent information in the directive about re-selling or installing VCR’s after 1 July but we anticipate that being in a position to supply will be a problem – perhaps now is the time to switch the remaining units to digital recorders.
If you intend to stay with analogue or switch to digital - either way Pro-Vision can help. We have a very limited number of VCRs left, but please call for details as stocks are very, very low and we can’t get replacements. However, we have a comprehensive range of digital recorders ex-stock. The complete range of Dedicated Micros digital video recorders from the basic eco4 to the feature-rich BX2 are available from stock with overnight delivery. Plus we also offer DVRs from Bewator, Bosch, Ernitec, Ikegami, JVC, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Sanyo, VideoSwitch and Visimetrics.
I hope this clarifies the situation, however should you require a copy of the directive, or further information please contact me.
